Sparkly socks
Meanwhile, I compliment her outfit. She’s wearing loafers with sparkly socks. She tells me that the socks are kind of her thing, and that she owns around ten pairs of the same ones, bought somewhere random in Spain.
D: I think socks are important. And sparkling socks are my thing. I don’t have many but I feel I have like 10 of them. I don’t even know where I get them, some shop in Spain. I don’t know, we have them a lot.
I wouldn’t spend a lot on fancy socks, but I think they’re super important. I have some striped socks that I like. I’ll wear an all-black outfit and then fun socks, and that’s cool to me. In winter, that’s my shit. Fun socks.
Y: Do you prefer winter or summer outfits?
D: That’s hard. I like the simplicity of a summer outfit. Cause I’m very basic. You can just throw on a dress and look cool.
I don’t want to say “chic”
Y: Okay, let’s talk about what you’re wearing. And Madrid. You’re from Madrid. I lived in Madrid three summers ago with one of my closest friends and I remember we always had conversations about the “Madrid-girl style”. And I feel like I have a strong opinion about that. I want to know yours.
D: Yes.
Y: Another close friend of mine, from Madrid, once told me something like “girls from Madrid are super elegant but sometimes they dress like clowns”. I think he meant that about the mixing of the patterns and the colours. How do you feel about this affirmation?
Also because, I never saw you very, very colorful and stuff and, like, mix-matching patterns a bit.
D: It just really doesn’t suit me.
Y: I think the same for me, every time I try to rock that, I look like I’m a child. Like I love also Vic Montanari, but I couldn’t dress like her, it’s just not my thing.
D: Yeah. Madrid girl can look a bit like Portuguese girl!
Y: I love Portuguese people so much.
D: I know that.
Anyway, your question.
I have a strong opinion on this.
This is one of the biggest Roman Empires in my brain. In Spain, and I don’t know if you picked up on it when you were there, there’s this specific style, which is called Cayetanita. I don’t even really know if there’s a French equivalent. A little bit posh but very specific. And it’s a bit wannabe.
And it’s crazy because to me they all look the same. But like, in extreme ways.
I see it in my sisters. I feel like a person who’s in Madrid and in the university life just, like, gravitates towards that. And I get some parts. Like, if you take specific pieces, I would wear. But I find the styling boring to me.
But I have a lot of friends who rock this style and I love them!
Y: Yes, when I was living with my friend all her wardrobe was like this. It was fascinating, checkered dresses, long skirts.
D: But anyways! I think it’s not that deep!
Vinted knows me pretty well
Y: What’s your Vinted algorithm right now? Mine is a lot of vintage La Perla, Agent Provocateur. I love lace and silk for some reason. I love what you’re wearing, it’s like one of those silk camisoles with lace details. And I love how sometimes at work you’re wearing basics, but you just know how to rock them and look so classy in them.
D: Basically what I have on my Vinted is like vintage 501 Levi’s specifically in white and in black. Both women and men’s. Waist size 30 for me or length whatever, I don’t care. And for my boyfriend waist size 34 I think and length 33.
Cause I’m obsessed obsessed obsessed with vintage Levi’s so much. Like they’re just so perfect and so comfortable and I love them so much.
My Vinted always has kind of basic tops! That I’m not super proud of…
I love basics so much. Not the best answer, cause you know, fast fashion, but I swear by Uniqlo. White black tops. What else? Some Brandy Melville basics pretty good. Brandy Melville long sleeve tops are always a good idea and they’re on my Vinted feed for like 5 euros.
Also! Ballet flats! No shocker. Like I’m always looking for different ballet flats, either some sort of print, or I don’t know, pony hair ballet flats, or classic black, because I always need a classic black.
Then you have the occasional random bag. And then when it starts getting cold I will have leather jackets on there. Because I still don’t own a perfect leather bomber jacket or a suede big oversized jacket, can you believe this? Every winter I try to look for the perfect one and I don’t have one!
That’s basically my Vinted and I love it. It’s an obsession and it knows me so wellll. Like I said I click on that app and I’m spending twenty minutes on there which is bad but I just love it so so so much.
I don’t think I’m ever gonna go back to retail shopping in person…. Girl I’m not stepping foot in a store I think ever again.
Y: Same, I hate to say this because of the hate of the whole Brandy Melville scandal but they have so good cotton… Any vintage stores you like in Paris?
D: I love to look at vintage stores as galleries. It’s archival. I don’t know exactly the name but there’s one near The Frankie Shop, super small and I love it.
It’s very chic. Actually I don’t want to say chic because I hate this trend going on like kinda chic… so I’m gonna say elegant.
The cow-print bag
Y: I’m also obsessed with my phone. And your bag.
I’ve seen her carry this cow print medium size a few times at the office now. I’m intrigued.
What’s in it?
D: My phone. Wired headphones. Navigo. My wallet pouch. Keys. And then I have an umbrella. And I have the work phone that I didn’t take out. I always need this bag.
This is vintage from my mom. She wanted to throw it away, and I was like, “Fuck no.” I’m taking it. And then it’s just comfortable and it fits everything and it’s cute. Like, yeah, I feel like since I’m always wearing black or white or, like, jeans...
Y: Yeah.
D: I need some sort of color and this does that. And overall it’s just comfy!
Clothes I’m always looking at, but not in a judgmental way
Y: What’s something you’re very good at noticing? Apart from this. Like people, clothes, spaces?
D: Clothes I’m always looking at. Spaces, I love. Not in a judgmental way.
Y: No, never.
D: Before, in the metro, I’m just looking around, seeing what people wear, with what. It’s so interesting for me. Just looking how people match certain clothes that I wouldn’t necessarily put together. How people walk. How they carry themselves. I think that’s super interesting.
Y: Do you look at people’s shoes?
D: A lot.
Y: Did I tell you this? You sent me a photo of your shoes and I was like, “Why shoes?” Also this is super interesting for me because I’m going to go work for a literal shoe brand.
D: Shoes are my favorite thing, category. My mom says that when I was a baby, I would look at people’s shoes in the streets. And I’ve always been obsessed with them.
Y: Do you think you’re different versions of yourself when you wear a different pair of shoes? Because I really do.
D: Yes!!
Y: The me in a ballerina is not me in my Saint Laurent ankle booties. I’m like, you know, this kind of innocent intellectual girl with my ballerinas, and then I’m like this rocker that goes to very late parties.
D: I love this. Each one is a different vibe.
